How and with what to properly clean mirrors?

In every home, a mirror plays an important role, because it is not only a functional addition, but also decorates the interior, brightens the room and makes it visually more spacious. However, in order for it to effectively fulfill its functions, it must be properly cared for. Be sure to read this article if you want to learn how to clean a mirror, how to deal with stubborn stains and how to prevent mirror corrosion. At first glance, it seems to be a simple task, but it often causes a lot of problems due to misconceptions or the selection of inappropriate products.

What to clean a mirror with?

It is worth using a microfiber cloth to clean mirrors, because it is delicate and does not leave fibers or scratches. In combination with warm water, it allows you to thoroughly remove dirt (it is important not to use too much water, because getting it to the edge of the mirror can result in corrosion). It is also worth using neutral cleaning agents (around 7 pH), i.e. those that do not contain vinegar, ammonia or alcohol, because they adversely affect the mirror surface. It is also worth remembering that all types of mirrors should be cleaned quickly and vigorously, so that the liquid remains on the surface for as short a time as possible.

Note! Do not use granular cleaning agents (e.g. bathroom milk) because the particles contained in them can irreversibly scratch the mirror!

How to prevent streaks when washing?
One of the most common problems encountered when cleaning a mirror is the formation of streaks on its surface. To prevent them, it is recommended to:

Use the right tools - due to its delicate structure, a microfiber cloth is the best choice, as it thoroughly removes dirt and does not cause streaks

Use warm water - in combination with a microfiber cloth, it perfectly removes dirt. After washing, remember to polish the mirror with a dry cloth (this will help remove excess moisture and prevent streaks)

Using a neutral pH mirror cleaner – it is best to apply it to a microfibre cloth to avoid excess liquid. It is not recommended to spray directly onto the mirror surface (this can lead to corrosion due to the liquid getting to the edge of the mirror)

Using the right cleaning technique – washing in one direction (e.g. from top to bottom). Washing with circular movements usually causes streaks. It is also important not to use too much agent or water, because this can also contribute to the appearance of streaks.

Polishing the mirror after washing with a dry microfibre – this helps to remove residual moisture and give the surface a perfect shine.

How to get rid of internal stains on a mirror?
Stains on the inside of a mirror most often occur when moisture gets between its layers. This problem usually occurs when the mirror is placed in a room with high humidity (e.g. bathroom).

Due to the fact that the stains are located under the outer surface of the mirror, in most cases they cannot be completely removed. However, there are several ways to prevent the problem from getting worse. The most popular are:

Reducing the level of humidity, e.g. by ensuring ventilation that helps to remove excess water vapor

Reducing direct contact of the mirror with water

Removing residual moisture from the mirror surface with a dry cloth

However, if the stains are already at an advanced level, it is worth considering buying a new mirror.

How to get rid of corrosion on a mirror?

Corrosion usually appears on the edges of the mirror, which are exposed to water and moisture or in a place where the mirror surface is damaged. This problem most often occurs when the mirror is in a humid environment, e.g. bathroom.

It is important to know that mirror corrosion cannot be completely eliminated, because it forms inside the mirror structure. However, there are ways to limit the development of corrosion:

Using appropriate ventilation systems in the room;

Regularly drying the mirror surface after bathing;

Regularly using mirror protection products that help protect their surface from moisture and dirt. These products usually create a thin, protective coating on the mirror surface.

Using silicone sealants - it can be applied around the edge of the mirror. It will create a protective layer that will limit the access of moisture. Important! The silicone must be waterproof, transparent and adapted to glass.

Summary

A mirror is an extremely functional and decorative addition to a room, which is why proper care is extremely important. Thanks to the above tips, you now know how and with what to clean the mirror and how to prevent unsightly stains and mirror corrosion. The most important thing is not to use products containing strongly acidic and alkaline substances
